Description
The Bachelor's Degree in French Language and Literature is awarded upon successful completion of the Undergraduate Study Program of the Department of French Language and Literature, School of Philosophy, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. The program provides comprehensive academic education in French language, linguistics, language teaching, French and Francophone literature, French history and culture, translation and translation studies. It aims to develop linguistic, academic, research and teaching knowledge and skills, preparing graduates for careers in education, translation, culture, research and other professional fields requiring advanced proficiency in the French language and French culture. The Department awards a single unified Bachelor's Degree.
Relation to Employment
Graduates may pursue careers in public and private education, higher education and research (following further studies), public administration, international organizations, translation, culture, journalism, tourism, banking, private enterprises and any professional field requiring advanced knowledge of the French language and intercultural competence.
Access Requirements / Progression Opportunities
Admission is governed by the applicable legislation on access to higher education. Graduates may continue with postgraduate programmes, doctoral studies and other forms of academic or professional specialisation in Greece and abroad.
Knowledge
Upon successful completion of the Undergraduate Study Program, graduates possess comprehensive knowledge of the French language at CEFR Level C2, together with the main branches of Linguistics and linguistic theory. They have acquired theoretical knowledge of the principles of Language Teaching and the disciplines supporting it, broad knowledge of French and Francophone literature from the Middle Ages to the present, French history and culture, as well as the fundamental theories and practices of Translation Studies and translation.
Skills
Graduates are able to analyse and synthesise linguistic data, design and deliver French language teaching courses, develop educational materials and apply contemporary language teaching methodologies. They can analyse and interpret literary texts, evaluate historical sources and cultural material, apply translation techniques to a wide range of text types and manage translation tasks in accordance with current professional standards. They also develop research, academic writing and oral presentation skills.
Competences
Graduates have developed independent, critical, creative and analytical thinking, together with organisational, decision-making, autonomous and collaborative working abilities. They demonstrate respect for diversity, multilingualism and multiculturalism and are capable of meeting the professional demands of French language teaching, translation, intercultural mediation and other fields requiring advanced linguistic and intercultural competence. They also possess the necessary academic foundation for postgraduate and doctoral studies.
