Description
The Bachelor's Degree in Law is awarded upon successful completion of the Undergraduate Study Program of the School of Law of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. The program aims to provide comprehensive legal education and develop legal reasoning through the systematic study of Greek, European and International Law. It covers the principal branches of private, public, criminal, international and European law, as well as legal history, legal philosophy and sociology of law. The program also develops graduates' ability to interpret and apply legal rules, analyse and resolve complex legal issues and act according to professional ethics, preparing them for regulated legal professions and further academic studies.
Relation to Employment
Graduates acquire the academic qualifications required for regulated legal professions, including lawyer, judge, notary public and other legal professions, in accordance with the applicable legislation. They may also pursue careers as legal advisors in the public and private sectors, European and international organisations, public administration, diplomatic services, business organizations, academia and research institutions.
Access Requirements / Progression Opportunities
Admission is governed by the applicable higher education legislation. Upon graduation, graduates may complete the professional training required for regulated legal professions and continue with postgraduate, doctoral and lifelong learning programmes in Greece and abroad.
Knowledge
Upon successful completion of the Undergraduate Study Program, graduates possess comprehensive knowledge of the principal branches of law, including Civil, Commercial, Criminal, Constitutional, Administrative, Labour, Tax, Procedural, International and European Union Law. They understand the fundamental principles of the Greek, European and international legal systems, the functioning of legal institutions, the sources of law and the methods used to interpret and apply legal rules. They also acquire knowledge of legal theory, legal philosophy and history, human rights, legal methodology, professional ethics and the relationship between law and social, economic and political developments.
Skills
Graduates are able to identify, analyse and interpret legal issues, apply legislation, case law and legal doctrine to resolve complex legal cases, prepare well-reasoned legal opinions and draft pleadings, contracts and other legal documents. They are capable of evaluating evidence, using printed and electronic legal resources, conducting legal research, presenting well-supported legal arguments both orally and in writing and collaborating effectively within professional and multidisciplinary environments.
Competences
Graduates are capable of practicing legal science with academic competence, independent judgement and professional responsibility while upholding the principles of the rule of law, justice, equality and the protection of fundamental rights. They are able to manage complex legal cases, make evidence-based legal decisions, adapt to legislative and judicial developments, act in accordance with professional ethics and contribute to the promotion of justice and good governance. They also demonstrate commitment to lifelong learning, legal research and continuous professional development.
