Description
The Bachelor's Degree in History and Archaeology is awarded upon successful completion of the Undergraduate Study Programme of the Department of History and Archaeology, School of Philosophy, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. The programme provides comprehensive academic education in History, Archaeology and Art History, combining theoretical knowledge, methodological training, research skills and practical experience.
The curriculum consists of a common core and includes two official academic specializations:
- History
- Archaeology and Art History
These specializations constitute the internal academic structure of the same undergraduate program and lead to the award of one unified Bachelor's Degree in History and Archaeology.
Relation to Employment
Graduates acquire the academic knowledge and professional skills required for careers in secondary education, historical and archaeological research, cultural heritage protection and management, museums, archaeological services, archives, libraries, research institutes, cultural organisations, publishing and other public or private institutions related to the humanities and cultural heritage.
Access Requirements / Progression Opportunities
Admission is governed by the applicable legislation on access to higher education. During their studies, students select one of the program's two official academic specializations (History or Archaeology and Art History). Upon graduation they are awarded a unified Bachelor's Degree in History and Archaeology and may continue to postgraduate programmes, doctoral studies and other forms of advanced academic specialisation in Greece and abroad.
Knowledge
Upon successful completion of the Undergraduate Study Program, graduates possess comprehensive knowledge in the fields of History, Archaeology and Art History. They understand the theory and methodology of historical and archaeological research, the principles of scholarly documentation and interpretation, and contemporary scientific approaches to the study of the past. They acquire knowledge of Greek, European and world history from antiquity to the contemporary period, prehistoric, classical and Byzantine archaeology, art history, museology, cultural heritage management and protection, and the use of historical, archaeological and artistic sources in academic research.
Skills
Graduates are able to identify, evaluate, document and interpret historical, archaeological and artistic sources, apply scientific research methods and use appropriate analytical techniques for the study of the past. They are capable of designing and conducting research projects, producing well-documented academic work, making effective use of bibliographic, archival and museum resources, employing modern documentation tools and communicating research findings effectively in academic and professional environments.
Competences
Graduates develop competencies in critical and synthetic thinking, scholarly documentation, research problem solving, independent and collaborative work, responsible professional conduct and effective management of academic information. They are able to contribute to research, education, the study, protection, promotion and management of cultural heritage, participate in interdisciplinary teams and pursue further academic and professional development through postgraduate studies, doctoral research and lifelong learning.
