Description
The Bachelor's Degree in Dentistry is awarded upon successful completion of the Undergraduate Study Program of the Department of Dentistry of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. The programme aims to educate dental professionals capable of practising general dentistry with scientific competence, professionalism and social responsibility, contributing to the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of oral diseases and to the maintenance of oral and general health. It combines theoretical education, laboratory training, preclinical and clinical education, follows the curriculum framework of the Association for Dental Education in Europe (ADEE) and fully complies with Greek and European legislation governing regulated health professions.
Relation to Employment
Graduates acquire the scientific and professional qualifications required to practise dentistry in accordance with Greek and European legislation. They may work in private dental practices, public and private healthcare institutions, hospitals, university clinics, research and educational institutions, public health organisations or continue with postgraduate and doctoral studies.
Access Requirements / Progression Opportunities
Admission is governed by the applicable higher education legislation. Upon graduation, graduates may obtain professional licensure in accordance with national legislation and continue with postgraduate, doctoral and lifelong learning programmes in Greece and abroad.
Knowledge
Upon successful completion of the Undergraduate Study Program, graduates possess comprehensive knowledge of the biomedical sciences, preclinical and clinical dental sciences and oral health sciences. They understand the physiology and pathophysiology of the stomatognathic system, the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of oral diseases, and the principles of preventive dentistry, periodontology, prosthodontics, orthodontics, paediatric dentistry, endodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, oral medicine and dental radiology. They also acquire knowledge of bioethics, public health, healthcare legislation, patient management, evidence-based dentistry and modern technologies applied in dental science, in accordance with the curriculum framework of the Association for Dental Education in Europe (ADEE).
Skills
Graduates are able to obtain complete medical and dental histories, perform comprehensive clinical examinations, evaluate diagnostic and radiographic findings, develop treatment plans and provide safe and effective dental care in accordance with the principles of evidence-based practice. They are capable of delivering preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, applying infection control procedures, using modern dental equipment and digital technologies, managing dental emergencies, communicating effectively with patients and collaborating with other healthcare professionals within multidisciplinary care teams.
Competences
Graduates are capable of practising dentistry with scientific competence, professionalism and a strong sense of responsibility towards patients and society. They are able to work independently and within multidisciplinary healthcare teams, make evidence-based clinical decisions, manage complex oral healthcare cases, promote disease prevention and oral health education, apply the principles of bioethics, patient safety and quality assurance, and adapt to scientific and technological developments. They also demonstrate commitment to continuing professional development, lifelong learning, scientific research and the continuous improvement of the quality of dental care services.
