Description
The Bachelor's Degree in Nursing is awarded upon successful completion of the Undergraduate Study Program of the Department of Nursing of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. The program provides comprehensive theoretical, laboratory and clinical education in Nursing Science, aiming to promote, maintain and restore the health of individuals, families and communities. Particular emphasis is placed on evidence-based nursing practice, clinical competence, interdisciplinary collaboration, research, healthcare management and the integration of innovative educational methods, including problem-based learning (PBL), simulation, virtual reality and artificial intelligence. The program is accredited by the Hellenic Authority for Higher Education (HAHE) and complies with contemporary European and international standards for nursing education.
Relation to Employment
Graduates acquire the scientific and professional qualifications required to practise as registered nurses in accordance with Greek and European legislation. They may pursue careers in public and private hospitals, primary healthcare centres, community healthcare services, mental health facilities, intensive care units, rehabilitation centres, public health organizations, educational and research institutions, or continue with postgraduate and doctoral studies.
Access Requirements / Progression Opportunities
Admission is governed by the applicable higher education legislation. Upon graduation, graduates may obtain professional licensure in accordance with national legislation and continue with postgraduate programmes, doctoral studies and lifelong learning programmes in Greece and abroad.
Knowledge
Upon successful completion of the Undergraduate Study Program, graduates possess comprehensive knowledge of Nursing Science, biomedical sciences, social and behavioural sciences and contemporary health sciences. They understand the structure and function of the human body, the pathophysiology of diseases, the principles of disease prevention, health promotion, treatment and rehabilitation, as well as nursing theories and models of care. They acquire knowledge of pharmacology, public health, epidemiology, bioethics, healthcare management, nursing research, evidence-based nursing practice and the safe use of modern healthcare technologies. They also understand the principles of quality improvement, patient safety, interdisciplinary collaboration and person-centred care in accordance with international nursing education standards.
Skills
Graduates are able to assess the healthcare needs of individuals, families and communities, plan, implement and evaluate individualised nursing care plans, provide safe nursing interventions and apply evidence-based practice across all healthcare settings. They are capable of using modern clinical assessment methods, simulation techniques and digital health technologies, responding effectively to emergency and critical situations, communicating with patients, families and healthcare professionals, collaborating within multidisciplinary teams and contributing to education, research and continuous quality improvement in healthcare services.
Competences
Graduates are capable of practising nursing with scientific competence, professional responsibility and respect for human dignity, patients' rights and the principles of bioethics. They are able to work independently and within multidisciplinary healthcare teams, make evidence-based clinical decisions, manage complex care situations, contribute to public health promotion and adapt to scientific, technological and social developments. They also demonstrate commitment to continuing professional development, lifelong learning, scientific research, healthcare quality improvement and the implementation of innovative nursing practices.
