Description
The Bachelor's Degree in Medicine is awarded upon successful completion of the Undergraduate Study Program of the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. The six-year program provides comprehensive theoretical, laboratory and clinical education in the basic, preclinical and clinical medical sciences. Its objective is to develop the scientific knowledge, clinical skills and professional attitudes required for the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of diseases, in accordance with the principles of evidence-based medicine, bioethics and patient safety. The programme includes education in university clinics and laboratories together with extensive clinical training in affiliated public hospitals. The Undergraduate Study Programme has been accredited by the Hellenic Authority for Higher Education (HAHE) with the highest rating, "Excellent".
Relation to Employment
Graduates acquire the scientific and professional qualifications required to practise medicine in accordance with Greek and European legislation. They may pursue careers in public and private healthcare institutions, university and research centres, public health organizations, diagnostic and healthcare facilities, international health organizations or continue with medical specialty training, postgraduate and doctoral studies.
Access Requirements / Progression Opportunities
Admission is governed by the applicable higher education legislation. Following graduation, graduates may obtain a licence to practise medicine, undertake postgraduate medical specialty training, enrol in postgraduate and doctoral programmes and participate in advanced professional training in Greece and abroad.
Knowledge
Upon successful completion of the Undergraduate Study Program, graduates possess comprehensive knowledge of the basic, preclinical and clinical medical sciences. They understand the structure and function of the human body, the mechanisms of disease, the principles of prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation, as well as current developments in biomedical science. They acquire knowledge in anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, pathology, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, psychiatry, public health, medical ethics, bioethics, epidemiology and evidence-based medicine. They also understand the principles of clinical decision-making, interdisciplinary collaboration and the safe delivery of healthcare in accordance with international academic and professional standards.
Skills
Graduates are able to obtain a complete medical history, perform clinical examinations, evaluate laboratory and imaging findings, formulate differential diagnoses, design and implement evidence-based treatment plans and provide safe and effective patient care. They are capable of applying clinical and laboratory techniques, managing emergency situations in accordance with established guidelines, using modern healthcare technologies and information systems, communicating effectively with patients, families and healthcare professionals and applying scientific evidence to clinical decision-making.
Competences
Graduates are capable of practising medicine with professionalism, scientific responsibility and respect for patients, human rights and the principles of bioethics. They are able to work independently and as members of multidisciplinary healthcare teams, assume responsibility for patient management, respond effectively to complex clinical situations, adapt to scientific and technological developments and contribute to the promotion of public health. They also demonstrate a strong commitment to continuing medical education, scientific research, healthcare quality assurance and lifelong professional development.
