Description
The Bachelor's Degree in Philology is awarded by the Department of Philology of the School of Philosophy of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. The undergraduate programme provides comprehensive education in Ancient Greek Philology, Latin Philology, Byzantine Philology, Modern Greek Philology and Linguistics. Students acquire theoretical knowledge, research skills and scientific methodology for the study of the Greek language and literature from antiquity to the modern era.

Graduates can find employment in secondary and post-secondary education, research, publishing, writing and editing, libraries, archives, museums, cultural organizations, public administration, media and communications, as well as in institutions active in the fields of language, literature, and culture.
Access Requirements / Progression Opportunities
A high school diploma and successful completion of the Panhellenic or placement exams are required. The degree is awarded upon successful completion of eight semesters and 240 ECTS credits.
Knowledge
Graduates acquire comprehensive scientific knowledge in the core and specialized fields of Philology, including Ancient Greek and Latin language and literature, Byzantine and Modern Greek Philology, Linguistics and Folklore. They also gain knowledge in specialized disciplines such as palaeography, papyrology, textual criticism, scholarly editing, literary theory, comparative philology, digital humanities, computational linguistics, sociolinguistics and cognitive science, developing a comprehensive understanding of the evolution of Greek language and literature from antiquity to the present day.
Skills
Graduates develop skills in understanding, analysing, interpreting and presenting Greek and Latin literary texts, applying philological methods and tools, critically evaluating and processing international scholarly literature, and preparing academic research papers. They also cultivate creative and critical thinking, teamwork, effective time management, adherence to deadlines, flexibility and adaptability in diverse academic and professional environments.

Graduates are able to analyse and evaluate literary texts and cultural heritage within their historical, social and cultural context, apply scientific methods in philological research and education, participate in research projects and international academic collaborations, pursue postgraduate and doctoral studies successfully, and work professionally in education, publishing, cultural institutions and other organizations related to language, literature and the humanities, promoting the values of humanism and academic integrity.
