Description

The Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry is awarded by the Department of Chemistry of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. The undergraduate programme provides comprehensive theoretical and laboratory education in all major and modern fields of Chemistry. Students acquire a strong scientific background in Inorganic, Organic, Analytical and Physical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Materials Chemistry, Environmental and Industrial Chemistry while developing research, laboratory and analytical skills through extensive practical training.

Graduates can find employment in the chemical, pharmaceutical, petrochemical, and food and beverage industries; in biotechnology; in chemical analysis laboratories; in the health sector; in environmental protection; in education; research, public and private organizations, as well as in self-employment in accordance with the applicable legal framework.

Access Requirements / Progression Opportunities

A high school diploma and successful completion of the Panhellenic or placement exams are required. The degree is awarded upon successful completion of eight semesters and 240 ECTS credits.

Graduates possess comprehensive theoretical and laboratory knowledge in the major and applied fields of Chemistry, including Inorganic, Organic, Analytical and Physical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Food Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry. They understand the structure, composition, properties, synthesis, analysis and transformation of matter, as well as the physicochemical principles governing chemical phenomena. They also acquire knowledge of modern laboratory techniques, analytical instrumentation, chemical technology and the applications of Chemistry in industry, healthcare, environmental protection and scientific research.

Skills

Graduates develop skills in designing and conducting laboratory experiments, safely operating laboratory equipment, applying analytical and synthetic methods, performing qualitative and quantitative chemical analyses, processing and interpreting experimental data, solving chemical problems and using modern scientific and computational tools. They are able to apply scientific methodologies in chemical analysis, quality control, material synthesis and the investigation of chemical processes with accuracy, safety and scientific rigor.

Competences

Graduates are capable of integrating chemical knowledge to solve complex scientific and technological problems, working effectively both independently and within multidisciplinary teams, evaluating scientific data, designing and implementing laboratory and research procedures, and adapting to scientific and technological advances through lifelong learning.
