Description
The Bachelor's Degree in History and Philosophy of Science is awarded by the Department of History and Philosophy of Science of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. The undergraduate programme provides interdisciplinary education combining history, philosophy and the study of natural sciences and humanities. Students acquire knowledge in history of science, philosophy of science, logic, history of philosophy, cognitive science, science and technology studies, as well as fundamental mathematics and natural sciences. The programme develops analytical and critical thinking and offers the opportunity to obtain a Certificate of Pedagogical and Teaching Competence.

Graduates can find employment in education, research, cultural institutions, science museums, libraries, archives, publishing organizations, scientific communication organizations, public and private organizations, as well as pursue master’s and doctoral studies.
Access Requirements / Progression Opportunities
A high school diploma and successful completion of the Panhellenic or placement exams are required. The degree is awarded upon successful completion of eight semesters and 240 ECTS credits.
Knowledge
Graduates possess comprehensive and interdisciplinary knowledge in the history and philosophy of science, acquiring a strong academic background in philosophy, history of science and technology, logic, cognitive science, the history and philosophy of the natural, social and human sciences, as well as science, technology and society studies. They understand the historical development of scientific knowledge, the philosophical approaches to science and the role of science and technology as historical, social and cultural phenomena.
Skills
Graduates develop skills in critical, analytical and synthetic thinking, constructing and evaluating philosophical arguments, historical and philosophical analysis of scientific theories, interpreting complex social, cultural and techno-scientific phenomena, and effectively communicating scientific ideas. They also develop problem-solving, creativity, communication, evaluation of contemporary developments in science and technology, and the ability to apply interdisciplinary approaches in academic and professional environments.
Competences
Graduates are capable of applying interdisciplinary knowledge to analyse issues related to science, technology and society, evaluating historical and philosophical approaches to scientific problems, formulating well-founded judgments and proposals, working independently or within multidisciplinary teams, and addressing complex challenges with creativity, critical thinking and scientific responsibility. They are also capable of pursuing postgraduate and doctoral studies and contributing to education, research and the communication of scientific knowledge.
